Wasp nests Increase in Hertfordshire
Queen wasps are looking for a cavity to start a nest. Here is where they tend to choose and what the first signs look like.
Queen wasps looking for a nest site
We are currently seeing a lot of queen wasps flying about in Hertfordshire. They are looking for a suitable place to start a nest, usually a cavity in a property where they can build in peace. A single queen starts the nest on her own, and the colony grows through the summer.
Where wasps like to nest
Wasps will build in any crack or crevice as long as there is a void behind it. Common places include:
- attic and loft spaces, getting in through the eaves of the house
- garden walls and chimneys
- garden sheds and outbuildings
- compost heaps and holes in the ground
- trees, bushes and birdhouses
The first signs of a nest
As the summer approaches you will start to notice more wasps flying about. That is often the first sign that there is a nest nearby. Watch where they are coming and going from, but do it from a distance.
